You may or may not have noticed that the site was down for the last few days. Unfortunately, the hosting company who hosts my site was abruptly bought/taken over, and the servers were actually physically unplugged and hauled across the country. Luckily, a good friend of mine had backed up all my files recently, excluding the pixelpost database, so I still have all my templates and image files. After doing some research online in regards to the (new) hosting company's track record, it appears as if it could be several weeks before I recover the pixelpost database which contains all the image/comment info that I've built up on this site over the last year. I was faced with the decision to let my site sit in limbo for weeks while waiting for them, or to simply cut my losses and start again. So here we are :) Depending on WHEN that database comes back, I may revert the site back to the way it was before. I will add many of my favorite photos back onto the site, and many old photos will not be added again. Just for fun, I'll throw in some older but unreleased material as well, to make it interesting.

To everyone who has left me comments over the last year, please know that they mean the world to me, and whether you believe it or not, I probably remember every one of them. I do this because I love it, and it keeps me sane, so the fact that anyone is interested in it at all is a blessing. This incident is the second event in as many months that has reminded me to be weary of our blind reliance on technology.

That being said, I've never really been afraid of starting over again, starting fresh. This will give me an opportunity to weed out the photos which I feel I've outgrown, and showcase some newer styles that I've been thinking of toying with lately. This was obviously devastating, and it would have been easy for me to get depressed about the situation and feel bad for myself, but I've always subscribed to the notion that we are all defined by our actions and choices in times of adversity. When you fall off the horse, you get back on.

  • Imran » I couldn't load your site for the last few days and was wondering what ever happened to it, well now I know. I do hope you recover the database. In any case, welcome back Justin. Good luck and keep on shooting!

  • anagnorisis » oh man! this is superb! i love the surreal feel to this! ;)
  • Robert » Good to see you back. Most empty parking lot images are kind of boring, but the light beams and overcast sky give it a mythic feel: "here is the exit I promised, go forth from this place and lock thy valuables in thy trunk."
  • micki » Amazing image! So good to see you back and what a wonderful attitude about the whole situation!! You are one of my new favorite morning hits and would have been sorely missed! Good that things worked out quickly and you made it back.
  • Justin Gaynor » Thanks for the nice response so quickly... anagnorisis: Thanks...it's strange, I spent years resisting the urge to toy with surreal images and focus on "straight photography" but lately I've found solice in keeping a nice balance between real and surreal. Sushi: This is a handheld, 5-shot HDR image :)
  • Gary » too bad about the hosting company..its a reminder that we're all somewhat at the mercy of others who could dissappear overnight...love all the "brush strokes" in this image
  • Keith » Dont it allways seem to go that you dont know what youve got till its gone. The day paradise put up a parking lot dooh wah wah wah. Anyway, this is may fav of the rash of pastely HDR big sky photos that are currently out there. the texture of the surface and the composition make it for me as well as the excellent processing. A crackingshot!

  • Ella » So glad to see you're back with such a beautiful image! You have been one of the first people to bookmark our blog and Sebastian and I highly appreciate your kind comments.
  • Solaria » Yes, technology.. can't live with it.. can't live without it. I went through some major and seemingly traumatic domain and server shifting issues with a really huge website of mine (though, not my photography one) a few years back that really ran me through the wringer -- so to speak. I've learned that it is what it is... and you realize that even if you host yourself on your own machines in your own basement, it might still not be there in the morning when you wake up... just like anything else in life. Despite this, we keep coming back, we still do it, we still love it and we learn. It's good to see you are still here. I will keep coming back to enjoy your photography. Thanks for sharing with us, and for the explanation. I think most of us do understand. Those of us that have the passion, and those of us that have been there... :)
  • clarence » Cool wildlife shot! Hope they stay out of the road!
  • What The Heck Journal » Hi Justin. Magnificent wideangle shot! The sky is a bit dark some places. But the texture and light on the asphalt looks stunning. - Martin
  • Ray Flinkerbusch » Hi Justin, Just clicked the "hey, where did everything go?!?" link so this comment probably isn't for the photo it's filed under ;) I'm with you on not being afraid of starting fresh however I also like to archives as a reference to see how ones skills have evolved. There are many photos of your earlier posts I like a lot so hopefully you'll get everythin back in working order. Weird though, that a company takeover has such a long effect on their loyal customers. Anyway, it's good to see you're back where you belong :)
  • Cristina » I love this photo and the way you captured all the colors and the textures of the cement. The sun beams are just beautiful Great job, love your stuff.
